With Zero : Fever Part 1 coming out soon, I wanted to catch up on the ATEEZ Universe (AU?? Hmm...ATU? I'll think about it.) before my first comeback as an ATINY and I realized...there's a lot of unrelated information and imagery in their videos. So, I'm going to do my best to put this in a coherent format, but please forgive me if parts of it don't make much sense. T.T I tried. Also it's not necessarily in order of release as it's in the most coherent order for the plot! The ATEEZiverse (oof, no, next time I'll get it--) begins in 'Intro : Long Journey,' the trailer for their debut album. In this MV, the narrator (who I believe is Maddox, a solo artist under the same company [KQ]) and the visuals from the boys set up the plot pretty simply. They describe "treasure" and how it can mean one thing to one person, but something totally different to another. ("It can complete us...or it can destroy us...and it can be different to every individual.") Right away, likely the first thing you'll notice is the giant ATEEZ flags they're holding. These seem to be important, as they continuously crop up as the videos progress, but I can't find a solution to them. At the end of the trailer, they ask, "what is your treasure, and will you join us [to find it]?" Of course, ATINY's answer is "duh, yes!" And there begins 'TREASURE.' Honestly, in terms of imagery, there's...not much to be found here. Obviously, there's the gorgeous visuals of the video, and the desert (joking, both are really pretty XD), but there aren't many clues to the actual plot. I found more clues in the lyrics. "Let's go away, far away, to that treasure calling us / Let's hurry, go find it / Oh every day, every night" They're embarking on their journey to find their treasures, whatever they might be. "We will be savage, we are savage, engrave it on the map" Engrave it on the map as in...mark it on a treasure map! This leads into 'Illusion' quite nicely. (By the way, their other debut MV was 'Pirate King,' but it's only choreography. Super cool, just not ZU related! [That's the one.] Check it out, though!) Next comes 'Illusion.' Almost the whole MV takes place on top of a pirate ship in the sky. The main premise of the MV involves the boys (mainly Hongjoong, if I'm honest) piloting the ship and figuring out where they're going. In a couple of the shots, Mingi is holding a telescope. I find this interesting, but just remember it until we get to 'Answer.' He also is wearing headphones. Keep this in mind. When they reach the island at the middle of the video, there are a couple interesting things there. Firstly, there's a giant floating hourglass. A little suspicious. Behind the (...tiny) mountain is a huge compass. These things tend to pop up in important sections later. About three-fourths of the way through the video, there is a cave that they seem to be stuck in. There's lots of pretty purple fabrics hanging in it, as well as the walls that look super shiny, almost as if it might've been an underwater cave? There is also a split-second shot of a man standing in the cave with a black hat. How very intriguing. Earlier in the video, in the background, there are a bunch of boxes. Hanging out of one of the boxes...is a black hat. We also get a very quick shot of a mask with some light chains--just like the hat man will wear later on. Later, the cave opens into a white room with lots of plants and odd pillars. The boys appear to find their way out of the cave then, and it turns out that the exit is where the man was standing minutes before. At the end of the video there's a cut of San, Jongho, and Yeosang napping on a bed. Mingi's snoozing under a tree, Yunho camped out in his car, and Hongjoong's out in the middle of the road--very out of place with the rest of the video, but it leads into the next one quite well. (Although it is a call-back to the beginning of the video when they were all asleep on the ship? I don't know...) Seonghwa, at the very end of the video, wakes up as someone whispers "open your eyes." So was the island only an ILLUSION? So then, next, we go to 'WAVE.' The song opens with 'We are at ocean blue now.' They made it to the first stop of their journey! 'Still staying together / I don't know where to go' I find this line interesting. Perhaps they've all agreed to move forward together, as a group. I also wanted to point out that the item hanging in front of Yunho is a God's Eye craft, or Ojo de Dios. This craft can mean a couple things, one of which is to protect those while they pray. Many users of the craft believe it to have the power to see and understand things invisible to the human eye, hence--God's Eye. ..I don't know what it means, I just wanted to point it out. 'Remember, remember, remember / Time is mutable' Huh. That's interesting. Mutable means 'liable to change.' So, is Jongho clueing us in early that not everything might be as it appears? Last thing for this video, San seems to have a sort of camcorder the whole time. I don't know if it means anything? There's a lot of super tiny hidden stuff in this video--I could probably make a whole post on it--but I just don't know what is related to plot and what isn't. They have a MV for 'Aurora' as well, but it's a performance version and there's not much in it. The only thing is this bridge, which seems vaguely familiar, but I can't place where it's from. 'WONDERLAND.'
This video is interesting as it doesn't really fit in with the rest of the plotline. The main thing that's confusing to me is all of a sudden everyone is very...separated. The entire theme of 'WAVE' and 'Illusion' was staying together, why are they separate all of a sudden? Could it have something to do with the man in the hat, or not? Final thing: The tower they all walk towards in the middle of the video has a compass rose on top of it. It seems important but I don't know what it means...
