SECTION ONE - At the very beginning over the trailer, all of the boys are sitting together around a small table, talking and playing with some things sitting on it. It looks like there's a bunch of white food on the table--for example, some macarons, drinks, and an unidentifiable substance that I believe must be pure sugar. There's also a half-black, half-white telescope on the table. (Fig. 1.1) The pattern on the table is quite interesting as well. I've seen a lot of people mentioning how it looks like planetary rotations or a star map. It also looks like a music record to me. Please don't ask me where I'm going with this, because I have no idea. Fig. 1.1 - Sugar highs incoming. After a couple seconds of them talking to each other (adorably), we zoom out a little bit into what I'm going to call a "constant panoramic view." This is where the camera is going to keep circling around the table, but things will change each time. First cycle: Yeonjun has opened up the telescope and is looking off into the distance with it. (I can't see where it's pointed.) Soobin has what looks like a nondescript bag of sweets, and Taehyun has a notebook that he's scribbling in. Kai is eating sweets and talking to Beomgyu, and although he pauses to view Taehyun's drawing, he doesn't appear very interested. Second cycle: We start with Yeonjun once again. He's got a phone that he's messing with this time. I'm not sure where it came from, but I'm assuming it was in his pocket. Soobin points something out on the screen, but Yeonjun doesn't seem to notice him. (Fig. 1.2) Kai and Taehyun are playing with some black pieces. I'm not sure what it is--it looks like dominos or chess, but I just can't tell. Fig. 1.2 - Oh, that's neat! Or not... Third cycle: And just like that, we loop around again. Yeonjun is eating snacks out of another nondescript white paper bag and jamming out to some music. That is, until Beomgyu pulls out his earbud to share it with Taehyun instead. (Yeonjun looks miffed.) But this is interesting. Soobin lays a hand on Taehyun's shoulder and gently shakes him a little, as if to get his attention. But Taehyun...completely ignores him. While I can understand ignoring a friend that's bugging you while you're doing something else, this seems different. It's almost as if Soobin genuinely isn't there. (Fig. 1.3) Fig. 1.3 - Guys? Hello? Fourth cycle: As we come around yet again, Kai, Taehyun, and Beomgyu are all playing with little white balls and other objects. There are various white items scattered on the table, and the board with black pieces sits discarded on the table in front of them. When it pans across the table, Soobin is sitting with the half-black, half-white telescope in front of him, smiling without really smiling. Fifth cycle: Yeonjun and Kai pass a ball back and forth, Kai catching it with a white and black catcher's mitt, like you would use in baseball. Soobin seems to finally catch on to what is happening. He glances down at the table in front of him, where lays an open box of matches. He glances back up at the boys. (Fig. 1.4) Wait. Matches? Whatever happened at Magic Island that night (Author's Note: See Magic Island - +U ANALYSIS AND THEORY), Soobin has finally figured it out. When he looks back over, the other four boys are clumped together tightly. Beomgyu is listening to music and eating snacks, Taehyun pulls out an earbud to roll dice, and Yeonjun claps at his roll before leaning in to tell Kai a secret. Soobin is alone. (Fig. 1.5) Fig. 1.4 - What happened that night at Magic Island? Fig. 1.5 - It hurts to watch your friends grow apart from you. ... / .- / ...- / . -- / . S A V E M E ... / --- / ... S O S ... / --- / ... S O S With some more of the Morse code that TXT is known for so well, the first segment comes to a close. SECTION TWO - The camera zooms out to show Soobin sitting alone on one side of a huge table, at least twelve times bigger than it was to start with. The other four boys side on the other end, talking away peacefully. (NOTE: Units? Soobin solo, Yeonjun/Hueningkai unit, Beomgyu/Taehyun unit?) I'd like to take this time to point out the background. (Fig. 2.1) Fig. 2.1 - Recognize the pool from Run Away? No? Don't feel bad. It's been abandoned, drained, and shrouded in darkness. After a minute, Soobin stands up, like he saw something. And, well, he did. Two cats eyes, one blue, one green, are peering out of the darkness behind the four other boys. (NOTE: The eyes are reversed. In Magic Island, NOAS, and Eternally [as well as on the HYYH Art Toy], the cat's eyes are blue on the left and green on the right. Here, it's the opposite. Perhaps the cat is actually behind Soobin, and all we actually see is a reflection? Or maybe there's another meaning?) Soobin begins to walk around the edge of the table, staying firmly on the line between the shadow and the light. To me, it looks more like he's in the shadow of the table rather than the light. (NOTE: His shoes say "MARNI" on the back...I don't know what this means?) He heads to the right a little bit before stopping and looking back up, as if he was testing something. Sure enough, the eyes have vanished...but even though he moved around the table, the boys are no closer than before. Slowly, Soobin turns back around, heading back towards his chair, to the left this time. It looks like he walks more in the light to me. The eyes reappear, and yet the boys remain at the same distance. (Fig. 2.2) Fig. 2.2 - The boys haven't noticed a thing... Realizing that whatever he was attempting to do didn't work, Soobin crawls up on top of the table. He sets off across it and reaches his hand out as if to touch them when it hits something solid. (I'd like to point this out, although I'm sure others already have, but Soobin looks completely stunned. Whatever this box/wall thing is, it is not something he was expecting to be there.) When he looks up, he's surrounded on 5/6 sides by glass. (Fig. 2.3) The back is open...although I'm not sure if that's intentional or not. Also, there's a door in the back of the room that's lit up. Why is it the only thing in the room that's lit? After a couple minutes, Soobin starts speaking and pounding on the walls. The following is the best translation I've found for what he was saying: Fig. 2.3 - Why is Soobin the odd man out? (translation credits: Choi Yeonjun, Choi Soobin, and many hardworking MOA translators! We love you guys!) "Why am I going through a hard time?" "Don't tell me I'm the only one in here?" "I'm not, so look!" "Can't you see me?" "Guys!" "Stop messing around!" "It's all because of you!" "Don't pretend you can't hear me!" "Look, look at me! I want to get out!" "Someone please save me..." Eventually, he realizes they truly can't hear him, and he gives up. Not only that, they have disappeared--when the camera zooms out at the end of the trailer, the other side of the table is empty. "Save me." We get a date. A time. A name. That's it. FINAL THOUGHTS -
To be honest, whatever the plot points behind this video might be, the fact remains that for everyone out there who feels invisible in their friend group, it hit hard. I know that once Soobin looked around at the others and silently realized none of them were interacting with him, I personally started to cry. I feel like a lot of people relate to this concept trailer, no matter what the cat means or why the telescope is on the table. Loneliness transcends language. If you got to the end of this post, do me a favor. Next time you see someone sitting alone, go over. Talk to them. Next time you see someone in your friend circle staying quiet, ask them a question. Pull them into the conversation. Sure, sometimes people don't want to be bothered. But a lot of times the people that are ignored want nothing more to be included, they simply don't want to say it. - Ilona O'Connor
