"They say people are born different--but why does it feel like we're all the same? Us, brainwashed into the same system. They expect perfection, so how can we be different?" "A sign, an omen, a..." "Glitch." A descent into a world of confusion, with two moons to boot. Send help, because I do believe that this is the universe that has finally broken my mind. Without further ado, here goes nothing!! small note for stays + anyone that knows what I'm talking about: whenever possible, I will be referencing things in terms of 8. I apologize in advance if this offends anyone. Let's Jump Straight In The Stray Kids MV Universe follows a utopian/dystopian plot in which the boys live in a laboratory/facility known as District 9. During this plot, they attempt to break out of the district and to discover who they truly are. (Hence, their albums series "I am NOT," "I am WHO?," "I am YOU.") The universe all starts in the "I am NOT Trailer." It begins with Chan and Felix narrating the part I wrote in the opening. There's also a high-pitched voice that says "Until I saw my reflection--that's when I woke up and realized that the truth had been hidden away from us." This short, less than a paragraph explanation perfectly sums up their introduction: Welcome to District 9, where nothing is real and everyone is the same. The buildings in the city have different words on them ("Fake," "Do not enter," "cloak," etc.) that show that they are most likely located in the heart of District 9. Chan looks up and sees a glitch in the sky, probably the first thing that alerts him to this fake world. Each of the boys seems to notice a different thing: - Chan sees the sky, glitching. - Minho sees an empty spot on the chalkboard, where he writes "I AM NOT." - Changbin watches himself on a series of frizzy television, before covering his eyes. - Felix sees himself in a bunch of mirrors before breaking one. - Jeongin, on the bus, sees himself sitting at the bus stop, smiling. - Seungmin is painting a picture that seems to match all of the other ones in the before he drags the brush across it, effectively destroying the "perfection" of it. - Jisung sees the bright light and his shadow. - Hyunjin has on a headset (looks like a VR headset actually). I'm curious as to who he actually is looking at (their head is covered by static) because a little bit after the figure begins to multiply in the headset until he yanks it off. (cr: "I am NOT" - Stray Kids Official MV) The Beginning Next up is "District 9." Most of this MV takes place, obviously, in the district. There's a row of grayscale bushes, and Chan happens to find one that is colored a dark red with green leaves near it. Why this is important, I'm mostly unsure, but it pops up again later as a sign so keep it in mind. He also finds a broken/shot-down drone with a piece of glass near it. In the MV, Chan alerts all the boys to the fact that they're going to break out, and then they all run out to the bus. They change their clothes and ride the bus through the invisible barrier that surrounds the district...which shatters into glass. (Seems as though the drone may have run into the barrier.) At the end of the video, they're dancing and messing around in what looks like a warehouse-turned-storage-unit. It may seem like they've escaped the district, but...that would be too easy. (cr top and bottom: "District 9" - Stray Kids Official MV) An Interlude "Grow Up." Now, don't get me wrong, I don't really think this video is a big part of this universe. But it does primarily take place on a school bus and at approximately 2:37 they pass a road sign that reads "District 9," which tells me one of two things. Either... One: They are returning to the district, either against their will or willingly. Hard to tell. Two: They never left District 9. Then is "Mirror" and "My Pace," a bit of a tricky interlude in the plot. "Mirror" I really only included here because of the amount of, well, mirrors. After seeing them in Felix's segment in "I am NOT," it feels important. In "My Pace," the cameras and the glitching throughout the video tell us it definitely takes place within the district. Why they're dressed as race-car drivers, and why there's race cars all around, I have no idea. That does create a nice link for God's Menu to hook onto, however. "I am YOU" picks up right where "My Pace" left off, even though there's a bit of a time gap between the two videos' actual publication dates. Changbin takes down the camera at the beginning of the video, showing that the boys are slowly starting to visibly rebel against the system. (As if the attempted break-out wasn't good enough...) This fact is also represented by the image of the boys walking against the flow of the current at the beginning of the video. Most of "I am YOU" takes place on a rooftop, which reminds me of another rooftop we'll see in a little bit. More on that later. Right now...at least they look happy. :') The Final Boss (cr top to bottom: "Hellevator" - Stray Kids Official MV, "I am YOU" - Stray Kids Official MV, "MIROH" Stray Kids Official MV) Next is another big jump to "MIROH." This one is a big one. It seems that a lot of theories I've read say they've escaped the district at this point, but--stick with me on this--they haven't. Remember that we saw that city at the beginning of "I am NOT," and, if you go back even further, the upside-down city from "Hellevator?"
This is that city. Welcome to the heart of District 9. (to be continued in Part 2!) - Ilona O'Connor
